Starting a bespoke joinery project is exciting for both the client and us. But before we put pencil to paper or select materials, there’s one step we never skip: asking the right questions. This part of the process lays the foundation for everything to come. It’s how we move from a loose idea or Pinterest board to something truly special – something that feels completely ‘you’.

We’ve been inspired by the approach of  @jennifer_quinn_interiors, who beautifully champions the idea of design being rooted in the client’s personality, lifestyle and vision. That’s exactly how we work, too – thoughtful design starts with thoughtful questions.

Here are just a few of the ones we always ask before we begin:

What Happens Before We Begin the Design Journey

by | Apr 17, 2025 | Luxury Homes | 0 comments

1. How do you want the space to feel, both for you and anyone who visits?

This helps us understand not just function, but emotion. Do you want calm and minimal? Bold and expressive? Warm and inviting? Design has the power to create a feeling, and we want to get that feeling right.

2. What do you need the space to do for you?

Storage, display, work, unwind, entertain – sometimes it’s all of the above. Understanding how you live (or want to live) in a space means we can build something that actively improves your daily life.

3. What works for you now, and what doesn’t?

This question is gold. Whether it’s a current layout that’s frustrating or a piece of furniture that’s become a favourite, we build on what’s real. Knowing your pain points and preferences helps us make practical decisions that work for you long term.

4. Are there any materials, colours or details you’re drawn to – or want to avoid?

We often encourage clients to take a look through our Pinterest boards before their consultation and design journey or send us inspiration photos. This helps us get on the same page visually from day one.

5. What does success look like for this project?

This one’s different for everyone. For some, it’s having a home office that helps them focus and feel proud on Zoom calls. For others, it’s creating a media wall that hides clutter and brings the whole room together. Whatever it is, we want to know.

6. Have you thought about a budget for the project?

This isn’t just about cost – it’s about ensuring we can do the job properly, and to the standard you deserve. We ask this not to steer you toward a number, but to make sure you’re in the right place to get the full benefit of our premium service and design journey.

We want to give you:

  • Time – to design something that’s truly right for you, to focus on the details
  • Quality – using trusted materials that last, feel beautiful and function brilliantly
  • Experience – where you’re heard, understood and never rushed
  • Detail – to carefully research, plan and develop your ideas
  • Service – from clear communication to a smooth installation

When we have a clear understanding of your budget, we can recommend the best materials and solutions that deliver real value. Our clients come to us because they want something exceptional – and we want to make sure we can deliver exactly that, without compromise.

Taking the time to understand these things makes our work better and the design process smoother – and makes your project feel effortless. If you’re thinking of starting your own design journey, we’d love to hear from you.
