From firefighter to furniture maker: the lessons, challenges, and passion behind Bespoke Spaces.

The first thing I want to say- running this business is without a doubt, the hardest thing I have ever done!

Starting a bespoke joinery business wasn’t just a career change for me – it was a complete reset. A bold decision to walk away from a secure job as a firefighter after 14 years and follow a growing creative passion that had been bubbling away in the background for years.

I loved my time in the fire service. In the early days, there was so much purpose – genuine rescues, adrenaline, camaraderie, and a feeling that I was doing something meaningful. But over time, things changed. Innovation was stifled, ideas were dismissed, and any desire to improve things was quickly squashed. It became harder to do a good job and even harder to feel proud of it.

The Path to Bespoke Joinery – And Why I’ll Never Look Back

During those quieter moments on the watch, I was learning practical skills – plastering, roofing, tiling, joinery – anything I could. I was lucky to meet Albert, a retired builder and the father of one of the Cub Scout Leaders at the group I volunteer with. What started with “let’s weigh up what walls we can move” turned into a full house renovation. Albert showed up every day with a lifetime of knowledge and the patience to pass it on. I owe a huge amount to him – not just for the skills, but for sparking a way of thinking that’s stayed with me ever since.

Years later, I built a two-storey extension on our home by myself, and the idea of designing and building custom pieces had completely taken hold. People started asking me to do jobs for them, and what began in a garden shed eventually became Bespoke Spaces.

The Leap – And the Reality

Leaving the fire service was a huge decision. It was part of who I was – and people don’t tend to leave. I had no big investment, no client base, no business plan. Just a shed, some tools, and an obsession with the idea that furniture could be more beautiful, more functional, and more personal than what most people were used to.

Finding a workshop was tough. Joinery equipment needs space, a flat floor, a dry environment – barns and garages won’t cut it. When I finally landed my first unit in Warrington, it felt like a massive upgrade from the shed… but the pressure hit me hard. I had no idea how to run a business properly – cashflow, quoting, systems – it was like building the plane while flying it.

Our first big project was for a local football club. It was a turning point, and it opened doors to more commercial work. We didn’t charge nearly enough, but we proved we could deliver. That led to more projects, and eventually to our reputation for saying “yes” when others say it can’t be done.

The Next Chapter – Bigger Team, Bigger Challenges

In 2024, we moved into a bigger workshop and took on staff. This has been the biggest challenge yet. With more mouths to feed and a business that needs to support other people as well as myself, the stakes are higher. Productivity dipped while we trained people up, cashflow got tighter, and I’ve had to learn quickly how to juggle design work, production, installations, quotes, marketing and admin – often still working until 2am.

Starting the business was the easiest part- running, growing and nurturing it, is a whole new level of challenge! I have never been so exhausted, with a huge amount of personal worry about so many elements- but the flip side to this is that I’ve been forming a team around me that I can share this with, and they’re becoming increasingly helpful in both practical and emotional support.

I’ve always been a people-pleaser, and I’m guilty of over-delivering on projects because I get so invested in the design. I spend far more time than I charge for, often adding upgrades just because it feels right. I’m not complaining – I love it – but it’s a balance I’m still trying to find.

Would I do this again? To be honest, knowing what I know now- probably not. I’d have picked a first business with fewer complications, lower investment and with less overheads- but do I regret it? NO! If I hadn’t given this a try, I’d have always wanted to, I’d have been drawn to it and maybe it’s one of those things that I couldn’t have avoided in some way or another! Now we’re up and running- it’s up to me (and my team) to take things to the next level, and never look back!

Despite the challenges, we’ve worked on some truly special projects – whole home fit outs, spectacular display walls, unique vinyl storage, and a growing number of secret doors (a personal favourite). Our clients trust us not just to build, but to solve problems and bring ideas to life. That’s where we thrive.

Where We’re Heading

My dream is to work on more of the fun, curious and high-impact projects. Large dressing rooms, bespoke cabinetry for audiophiles, themed children’s bedrooms, clever outdoor kitchens, and secret doors that spark real joy. I want us to be the go-to company for creative, high-end joinery that’s as functional as it is beautiful.

Most of all, I want our clients to choose us not because we’re the cheapest – we’re not – but because they love the way we work, the care we put in, and the feeling of having something truly unique. I want us to be the team people trust with their home and their vision. And I want to do it without losing sleep every night!

We’re getting closer. We’ve built something we’re proud of, and the feedback we receive makes it all worthwhile. We’re still learning, still improving, and still aiming high.
