Project brief
A functional yet stylish airing cupboard, designed to utilise some ‘leftover space’ on a landing and combine washing and storage within one stylish cabinet.
Objective – Find a solution with Bespoke joinery:
To create space elsewhere in the home, (currently occupied by disorganised mixed washing piles) and also create an efficient way of handling ‘dirty washing’ and ‘clean washing’. The solution must look good, be in keeping with the house and be easy to use.
The mission:
Crafting an ambience of luxury while maximizing storage efficiency.
Our Approach:
We concentrated on three thoughts for this project-
- How could we make washing clothing, bedding and towels etc more efficient and save time?
- How much space this would require, and where could we find it in the property?
- What style should we adopt for the cabinetry to suit the home?
It was quickly identified that having several locations to collect ‘dirty washing’ from in the home was both time consuming and taking up lots of valuable space- so the decision to have one location for this was an easy improvement to make. This also suggested that a place central to each bedroom would make sense, and we found the perfect area for this cabinet on the landing, where there was an existing cupboard.
The existing cupboard wasn’t’ taking advantage of the entire space available, in width, depth or height- so this meant we would gain huge amounts of space to utilise for this cabinet.
We suggested having four baskets (within individual drawers) for the dirty washing to be collected- whites, colours, darks and ‘other’. Baskets were chosen and measured, and the remaining height was utilised for deep shelving for storage of clean washing. This included bedding, towels, blankets, and consumable items used upstairs such as toilet roll, cosmetics etc.
We incorporated a convenient pop-out shelf that users can place the clean washing basket, and fold/store items throughout the 1st floor of the property, and also into the shelving within the cabinet of course! This saves lots of bending down, unorganised piles etc- and one of our favourite features!
In choosing the style, we took reference from the existing panelled doors and furniture within the 1st floor, and created a ‘shaker style’ shape to the drawers, doors and side panel. A cornice feature was included to suit the age of the property, with a nice dark colour being chosen for our spray-painted finish.
The Outcome – Bespoke commercial joinery delivered!
Wow- what a transformation! The cabinet is a huge improvement on what was there before- more stylish, more storage space, and a huge boost in efficiency when washing/putting away clothes and bedding! The areas in bedrooms previously used for storing dirty washing have now given more space- and there are no washing baskets on-site anywhere in the house now… a much more relaxing place to live as a result!
On the face of it, this was a straight forward and ‘obvious’ project for this house. However, it’s not very often that homeowners realise that even the simplest of changes like this, can make the world of difference to a home!
Most spaces can be made more efficient. Items can be stored neatly and out of sight to reduce the overwhelm of day to day life. Space can be realised from most rooms, to give the feeling of a larger home, or give options for reorganising other rooms- quite easily in most cases!
This all goes to show that even the simplest of cabinets, well-considered and designed thoughtfully- can enhance your home and help to make your life a little bit better!
