Home Office That Doubles as a Music Room

Objective

To create a space to work from home, for two people. There needed to be sufficient space for working, computer equipment, storage and books. The room should also be available to use as a music room, with a piano, guitars and flute being played by different members of the family!

Our Approach

The first factor to consider was the perceived limitations of this space- there was a bay window and two alcoves, leaving just two walls that would typically have been available for a desk or the piano. 

We considered how to utilise the alcoves (these lend themselves to storage well) and how we could utilise the difficult bay window shape. The decision was made to create an over-sized floating desk across the entire bay window wall, leaving maximum floor space elsewhere in the room, and an entire wall for the lovely piano to locate.

This gave the option for looking out of the windows whilst working, and enjoying natural light too

In terms of using the room for other purposes, custom drawers were created in the alcove cabinets for guitar effects pedals to side out from and hanging locations for guitars were created. Books were located on floating shelves, and electrical cables were routed through the inside of the desk and alcove worktop- giving a clean finish and a clear desk when not in use for ‘work—mode.’

We even found office chairs with fold up arms so that they could double up to be used for playing the guitar!

The Outcome

A lovely, airy and light room was created with floating shelves, a huge floating desk and cabinetry- all in the same style to create a blended feel to the joinery. The office works well, with much more working space than a conventional desk arrangement and there is lots of storage for books and display pieces in the alcoves

This relatively small room could easily have felt small and cramped with everything shoehorned in- but with clever planning and utilisation of the difficult spaces, we were able to create a space that feels large and spacious, with an abundance of natural light.

The other benefit we haven’t talked about is that this has resulted in a very important place for working at home that is separate to ‘home life’ and the many distractions that can come with this (and somewhere for the music to be behind closed doors too!)
