Home Gym and Utility Space
Bespoke residential joinery
Client:
Director of a retail company
Built, Delivered & Installed
Converting a double garage into a versatile space, including a well-equipped home gym, utility area and storage space.
Objective – Find a solution with Bespoke Residential Joinery:
Our client is a busy guy! As a director of a successful retail company, time all important- so the decision to create a decent place to workout and keep himself in top-form was made to not only make the most of the space, but create a better lifestyle with less rushing around… whilst still getting everything done!
The utility space would be enhanced with additional worktops, and bespoke storage created to give a home to ‘difficult-to-store’ items such as wellies, prams, golf trolleys etc. With the transition to electric vehicles, charging sockets would also be required within easy access of the driveway.
Our Approach:
The first stage was to list the functional requirements for each of the zones. Where would washing get dried/folded? What equipment was required in the gym? How much floorspace needed to remain for exercises? What were the ‘difficult’ items to store and how often were they accessed?
This let us mock up some potential layouts for the space
Following this, we were able to think about style- including decors and finishes, before submitting a design proposal and confirming the finer details!
The Outcome:
We opted for the gym to be against the wall furthest from the house- giving as much privacy and sound isolation as possible, whilst also benefiting from a window giving sunlight to the room. Rather than utilising the entire depth of the garage, we set the front wall back so that access for car charging, golf trolleys, pram etc- would be extremely convenient from the point of use (the driveway!) by opening the roller shutter doors. This also keeps them out of sight and the remaining space (utility area) does not need to feel overwhelming with non-utility type items being stored in there.
An additional worktop was matched and added to allow for an area to process the washing/drying of clothes, with tiles being installed to create a warmer feel to the space. Clean, reflective ceiling cladding was installed to brighten up the space (with limited natural light) and easy maintenance tiling was applied to the floor.
The gym layout was based around our client’s usual activities- with a mirror wall opposite the window, not only boosting natural light but also creating a greater feeling of space (Effectively doubling the perceived size of the gym). A custom whiteboard was created to fill a small angled wall, for recording personal targets and progress
Our client chose a raw/industrial style OSB board for the walls, which were chamfered and sanded to give a smooth feel- whilst also offering unlimited fixing options for displaying personal items and hanging boxing gloves etc.
We built in the tv screen and devices, and created a cupboard to hide the consumer unit etc, and LED spotlights give a nice bright space to workout. The floor was built up and levelled to overcome the initial pitch, and laid with a high-density rubber flooring, perfect for workouts and using the barbells etc.
In Summary:
Whilst we tend to focus more on bespoke joinery, this project is a good example of our space planning and optimising ability. We were able to create a nice space for undertaking tasks/working out etc- but in a way that was separate from the house, yet convenient and well thought out.
We added efficiency and capability to this household- and most importantly, helped to save our busy director previous time from his weekly schedule.
