Elegant Understairs Storage

Objective – Find a solution with Bespoke Joinery:

We aimed to utilise this hidden space by creating a custom storage solution, tailored to the family’s needs- designated places for boots, trainers, bags… everything to have it’s place to be neatly tucked away (rather than out in the entrance hall!)

There were electrical services to work around, including the main feed and consumer unit, so we needed to take careful measurements and design around this- both in terms of creating an item that fits around them, but also allows access for using the consumer unit and future maintenance.

There is a lovely feel to the hall and staircase already, so the intention was to keep this style and use a soft white to help the storage blend into the room.

Our Approach:

We created a list of items to be stashed away and took detailed measurements of the area. Once the design was completed and approved, we worked through potential door/drawer front styles and décor choices.

We opted to have one large pull-out drawer on the right-hand side, which is disguised as two panels. This would cater for bags and tall shoes such as boots.

On the left, we installed a matching door with a combination of drawers and a door behind. The door was used to give complete access to the consumer unit behind, for easy maintenance. It also allows for reaching the electric meter.

There is a turn to the staircase which could have resulted in a large filler piece at the bottom, or wasted space at the side- instead of this, we created yet another area to store ankle height shoes, in a wide and low-level drawer where you’d expect a skirting board or plinth to be.

We removed the existing panelling on the stairs and replaced the uprights with new pieces to match and align with the understairs doors, and this made the whole piece blend in really nicely.

The Outcome – Bespoke joinery delivered

We managed to not only add a huge amount of storage here, but also created one of our favourite understairs projects to date! The whole storage area blends in so well, and the natural light in this area softly highlights the shaker-style panelling. 

For our client, there is now more space in the hall, providing a pleasant entrance to their home. With everything in it’s place, it’s easier to find items when leaving the house too!

This project demonstrates some of the main benefits from choosing a bespoke joinery company to create a solution like this- there are no large filler pieces, accessing electrical services is still possible (but without losing lots of storage space) and the style blends in seamlessly with the rest of the home.
