The Challenge 

When a passionate vinyl record collector approached us, they weren’t just looking for another storage unit. This client, with a collection of between 2,000 and 3,000 prized records, wanted a solution that was as much about showcasing his favourite album art as it was about functional storage. He envisioned a seamless, elegant way to display select vinyl sleeves in all their glory, allowing the collection itself to become an ever-changing art installation within his new home.

The Approach

Our client came to us with an innovative idea involving pull-down shelves, but it was up to us to bring this concept to life. We refined the concept into a series of discreet, hidden shelves that could pull down from underneath the main storage area, creating a “gallery” effect where selected records could be displayed like artwork. This allowed for a seamless integration into the rest of the room, while still offering the flexibility to transform the storage unit into a showcase whenever the client wanted to highlight specific pieces from his collection.

We chose rich, deep walnut wood to give the unit a timeless, luxurious feel, complemented by in-house painted elements for a refined finish. The combination of these materials brought warmth and sophistication to the room, perfectly befitting a collector with high standards and a passion for quality.

Adding the Collector’s Signature Touch

To elevate this project even further, we explored additional ways to make the piece feel personal to the client. We collaborated with Lasercutit, a company specialising in precision laser etching and engraving. Together, we came up with the idea to engrave logos and designs onto the pull-down shelves, using artwork provided by the client. These logos, which were meaningful to the collector, added an extra layer of personality and exclusivity to the piece.

Each of the 30 hidden shelves received its own unique engraving, turning the unit into not just a storage solution, but a visual narrative of the collector’s journey and tastes. Now, every time he displays a new record, the engraved details enhance the artistic presentation, turning his collection into a curated exhibit that can change over time.

The Result

The end result is a one-of-a-kind furniture piece that seamlessly combines functionality with artistry. At a glance, it appears to be a beautifully crafted walnut storage unit that complements the rest of the room’s design. But with a gentle pull, it transforms into a display space where selected album covers can take centre stage, making the collection itself a dynamic focal point within the home.
